The ingredients needed to make Instant Pot Dal Soup:
  1. Get 2 TBSP Ghee (or other high-temp oil)
  2. Get 1 tsp Cumin Seed
  3. Take 1/8 tsp Hing (Asafetida) optional
  4. Get 1/2 small Onion, chopped
  5. Get 1 TBSP Garlic, minced
  6. Take 1 TBSP fresh Ginger, minced (or 1 tsp ground ginger)
  7. Prepare 1/2 tsp Turmeric
  8. Get 1/2 tsp Indian Red Chili Powder (or cayenne)
  9. Get 1-1/2 tsp Kosher Salt
  10. Prepare 3 Cups Water
  11. Take 3/4 Cup Red Lentils (rinsed, same as you do for rice)
  12. Take 1/4 Cup Yellow Lentils (split peas) (rinsed)
  13. Prepare 1 TBSP Tomato Paste
  14. Get 1/2 tsp Garam Masala
  15. Get Lemon juice to taste
  16. Get Chopped Cilantro (optional)
  17. Get Chopped fresh Spinach (optional)
  18. Prepare PREP and measure your ingredients first for ease of cooking!
Instructions to make Instant Pot Dal Soup:
  1. Press the SAUTE button to heat the Instant Pot. When hot, add Ghee, swirl around until shimmering.
  2. Add Cumin seed and Hing. When Cumin Seed sizzles, add Onion, Garlic and Ginger. Mix well, saute 1 minute.
  3. Add Turmeric, Red Chili powder, and Salt. Mix well.
  4. Turn OFF pot by pressing CANCEL.
  5. Add Lentils, Water and Tomato Paste. Mix well.
  6. Pressure Cook on HIGH for 6 minutes. After cooking is complete, RELEASE NATURALLY until float valve drops. (Approx 6 minutes in a 6-quart pot; approx 15 minutes in a 3-quart pot.
  7. Add Garam Masala and a squeeze of fresh lemon. Top with fresh spinach or cilantro if desired. Enjoy!
